Fine Art in Pastel and Oils

bonnie griffith bio picI am a landscape artist who works in pastels and oils painting the western landscape. Whenever possible I am painting en plein air to capture the light in real time. It is my goal to produce work that draws the viewer into the painting; allowing them to get lost in the moment and make it their own experience. I want you to be able to sense the temperature, the time of day and enjoy that piece. Maybe it brings back a memory or creates a dream. If this happens then I have done my job.

I choose to work with dry pastel pigment and oils…both because they are rich in color and allow me to express my impressionistic approach to my work. I often use a palette knife as a sole tool to put oil paint to the canvas, especially when working plein air.

The love of art was fostered at an early age by my parents. I grew up in an artistic family and was allowed to experiment with mediums and always encouraged.

I studied with Lorenzo Chavez and Elizabeth Mowry and have curated for several galleries including currently serving as the Meridian Arts Commissioner liaison for the Initial Point Gallery in Meridian, Idaho. I was the Executive Director of the WaterWorks Art Museum and Art Center in Miles City, MT before moving to Idaho. I have juried and judged several plein air festivals including the Escalante, UT ECAF Plein Air and numerous competitions in Montana and Washington.

Some of my favorite art events are Plein Air Paint Outs, Quick Draws and teaching the technique of pastel painting to willing students.

I am a signature artist member of the Northwest Pastel Society, the Pastel Society of the West Coast, The Plein Air Painters of Idaho, Treasure Valley Art Association, and Landscape Artists International. My work is represented locally by Finer Frames And Art Gallery, Eagle, ID; Pendleton Art and Frame, Pendleton, OR; EarthWorks, Yachats, OR; Wenaha Gallery, Dayton, WA; Valley Bronze, Joseph, OR, Moccasin Mountain Gallery, Lewistown, MT; The Depot Gallery, Red Lodge, MT; Dodsons, Spokane, WA and American Art Company, Tacoma, WA
